Awareness
The first step to changing your money beliefs is to recognize and acknowledge the negative beliefs you may have. We always hear the term awareness used in different ways, but in this context it means to be conscious or cognizant of how you think and feel about money. Once you are aware of your thoughts and feelings about money, it is the right time to reflect on where those beliefs have come from and how they have influenced your financial decisions.
Challenge and Reframe
Once you have identified your negative money beliefs, you can now challenge the validity of those beliefs. Take the belief that you have in mind and firstly see if it is one that you have chosen? or was it given to you? For example growing up you may have heard that you’re always wasting money! and that now leads you to believe that you’re no good with money. This would be an example of a negative belief being given to you. Now that you are aware of the belief given to you, you can then choose to Reframe it into a positive affirmation. For example, replace “I’m not good with money” to “I can learn to manage my money well.”
Positive Affirmations
As mentioned in the end of step two, use positive affirmations to reinforce healthier money beliefs. Statements like “I deserve financial success” or “Money is a tool that can be used for good” will gradually help you to shift your mindset.
Education
Improve your financial literacy by learning about budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt. Knowledge can empower you to make better financial decisions and feel more in control.
